Short-Term Memory

Back to the Lexicon

What is it?

Short-term memory is the brain’s ability to temporarily hold a small amount of information for a brief period—typically just a few seconds. It’s the system you use when you remember a phone number just long enough to dial it, or when someone tells you their name and you hold it in mind while you greet them. Unlike working memory, short-term memory doesn’t actively manipulate information—it simply stores it briefly.

Why is it important?

Short-term memory is essential for daily functioning. It supports immediate tasks like reading, listening, and responding in conversations. Without it, we couldn’t follow a train of thought, remember where we just placed our keys, or perform multi-step directions. Even though it’s fleeting, short-term memory lays the groundwork for longer-term memory and learning.

Short-Term Memory and Aging

Short-term memory naturally declines with age. You may notice difficulty remembering names, where you left items, or the details of a recent conversation. Fortunately, engaging the brain through practice and memory techniques can help slow this decline and even enhance short-term recall over time.

How the Memory Training App Can Help

The Memory Training App helps strengthen short-term memory through quick, repetitive recall tasks. By asking you to remember number sequences and immediately reproduce them, the app targets and trains your short-term memory system. Regular training improves your ability to retain and recall short bits of information—boosting your confidence and clarity in everyday tasks.
